What does being a good citizen mean to you? Tell us what you do to help others in your community and the world in a short essay or video. You could be chosen for a 2012 TruFit Good Citizen Scholarship.


40 Scholarships will be awarded equaling $50,000.

How Social Media Influences Scholarship Finalists

Applying for an outside scholarship this year? The application may not be the only way that the scholarship committee is choosing their recipients!  Fastweb and 300 members the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) who collectively award more than $1 billion in scholarships each year, participated in a survey that gives us a better understanding of the extent to which they use the web and social media to evaluate their scholarship applicants.

Key findings from the survey included:

1. About a quarter of scholarship providers use web search sites
  like Google and/or social media web sites like Facebook,
  LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter to search for online information
  about scholarship applicants. Most screen only finalists due
  to a lack of resources to screen all applicants.

2. Three quarters of the scholarship providers were looking for
  one or more red flags, mostly for signs that the scholarship
  applicant might reflect badly on the scholarship sponsor.
  They wanted to see whether the applicant demonstrates good
  judgment, and were looking for provocative or inappropriate
  photographs or remarks, illegal activities (e.g., underage
  drinking and use of narcotics), insensitive or discriminatory
  remarks or a negative attitude. A quarter reviewed the
  student's online presence to identify or resolve conflicting
  information about the applicant, such as lies about
  qualifications listed on the application form.

3. More than half of the scholarship providers review an
  applicant's online presence to get to know the applicant
  better, to look for creativity and other positive personality
  traits or to evaluate real life communication skills.

4. A third of scholarship providers who reviewed an applicant's
  online presence have denied an applicant a scholarship and a
  quarter have granted an applicant a scholarship because of
  information they found out about them online.

NHSC Scholarship Program

The National Health Service Corporation (NHSC) awards scholarships each year to students pursuing careers in primary care - Bay Path's new Physician's Assistant program qualifies! The scholarship includes:

• Payment for tuition, required fees, and other reasonable educational costs
• Monthly support stipend (taxable)
• Assistance in finding a practice site 

In return, students commit to serve in the Corps for two to four years in an underserved community located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) upon their graduation and licensure.

Melba Corliss Endowment Fund

The Melba Corliss Endowment Fund of the Zonta Club of Springfield, MA awards a $5,000 scholarship annually to a woman enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate or graduate course of study at an accredited college in the Western Massachusetts Area. Melba, a business executive and co-owner of the Corliss Adjustment Bureau in Springfield, was a past president and active member of the Springfield Zonta Club until her death in 1996. Her generous bequest to the Springfield club has led to the establishment of this annual scholarship.

The deadline for applications to be received by the committee is April 15, 2012 and notification of the award will be by June 15, 2012. Applications are available at www.zontadistrict1.org/springfield_ma

MassMutual Scholars for Multicultural Students

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is pleased to announce that its MassMutual Scholars program is now a national scholarship program for high-achieving African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic students interested in careers in the insurance and financial services industry.

This year, the program will offer thirty $5,000 college scholarships to high-achieving students across the country.

Springfield Garden Club Scholarship

The Springfield Garden Club invites applications for $2,000 in scholarship assistance for undergraduate and graduate students for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applicants must be residents of Hampden County, Massachusetts majoring in plant sciences or environmental studies programs such as horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, land management or other allied fields.

The Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarship

The Sunflower Initiative Inc. is offering a $10,000 scholarship for a young woman attending a women's college. The Sunflower Initiative, Inc. (TSI) is a corporation formed by a group of alumnae of Randolph-Macon Woman's College for the purpose of supporting women attending women's colleges. Its first scholarship, the Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarship, in the amount of $10,000, will be awarded for academic year 2012-13.

The Scholarship Committee of TSI will consider applications postmarked on or before March 15, 2012. The recipient must be academically motivated; she must possess a stellar high school record, strong references, and a desire to make a contribution to society.

AARP Foundation Scholarship - Women over 50!!!

The AARP Foundation has announced a call for entries for its sixth annual Women's Scholarship Program. The program provides funds to low-income women age 50 and older who are seeking new job skills, training, and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be able to demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled in an accredited school or technical training program within six months of the scholarship award date. The program will give priority to women raising the family members of others, to women that have been out of the workforce for more than a year, and to older women veterans.

Scholarship winners are chosen on the basis of financial need, personal circumstances and achievements, educational goals, and the likely impact of the scholarship on their lives.
Scholarship awards range from $500 to $5,000, depending on financial need and the cost of the education or training program. The number of scholarships awarded varies from year to year, depending on the availability of funds and the number of applicants. In 2011, the program awarded over three hundred and fifty scholarships.

Funds may be used for partial or full tuition, fees, and books, and may be used for part-time as well as full-time study. Funds will be distributed directly to the institution.
